Mixed Reality Platform for Mobile Service Design in Urban Planning

Investigating architecture design and urban planning, we discover that mobile service has already become a necessary layer over the physical space both nowadays and in the future. Though, this invisible layer is of such importance, emphasized by formerly Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT, William Mitchell, the design method and model of architecture is still not suitable for mobile service design, and its related applications: ubiquitous computing, proximity-triggered interaction, context-aware application, spatial publishing, urban mixed reality game design, tagged media design, and location-specific scenario design.

On the other hand, current methods of mobile service design are, generally speaking, manual modification, rule of thumb, or using 2D geography related information, such as a map, as a visualization tool. Facing these more and more mobile services, and emerging new types of services, new design method and model becomes a more and more important issue.

This research project proposes a mixed reality platform, integrating physical scale model and tangible augmented reality interface, and supporting participative and cooperative design. This platform enables designers to design mobile service visually, spatially, and with tagged media. Moreover, this platform is very efficient to design the mobile services described above and their related applications. Thus, we also contribute a new paradigm of space design in the future.
經由建築設計與都市規劃的研究,我們發現行動服務,已經成為現在與未來的空間規劃中,不可或缺的一層。雖然不可見的這層(行動服務),誠如麻省理工學院前建築學院院長William Mitchell所言,如此重要,但是,一般建築設計所採用的模式,至今仍然未完整地考慮,如何根據空間的特性,設計與規劃無線傳輸服務,以及隨之而來的:無所不在的計算(ubiquitous computing)、鄰近觸發式互動(proximity-triggered interaction)、環境感知應用(context-aware application)、空間發佈(spatial publishing)、都市混合實境遊戲設計(urban mixed reality game design)、標籤媒體設計(tagged media design)、地點相關情境設計(location-specific scenario design)等等。


本計畫將提出的混合實境設計平台,整合實體比例模型(physical scale model)、可觸知擴增實境界面(tangible augmented reality interface),提供參與式(participative)、協同式(collaborative)設計,讓設計者能夠將行動服務設計視覺化(visualization)、空間化(spatialization)、以及標籤化(tagging),能有效地設計上述多種行動服務及隨之而來的應用,進而提供,全新的空間規劃典型之一。
